Description
- Simone tells us “In 2015 I bought this black Groningen sampler from 1822 in its original black frame at an auction. These black samplers are typical of the Groninger “Oldambt” and were embroidered by daughters of wealthy farming families. They were manufactured in the period 1800 – 1880. After that, this tradition came to an end and the red school schoolsamplers were introduced as part of the useful crafts course in primary school.
The maker of this sampler is “Elisabet Pieters Doornbos”. She was born on November 4, 1798 in Noordbroek (Groningen) and died on June 4, 1874 in Beerta (Groningen), she was 75 years old. Elisabet embroiders the sampler in 1822 when she is 24 years old, which is quite late.”
Model was stitched on 40 count Cocoa hand dyed Newcastle linen from Weeks Dye Works and stitched with 1` strand of Old Crow silks from Belle Soie Classic Colorworks.
Stitch count is 197 W x 197 H.
