Description
Needlework Press tells us: “Next to nothing is known about this marking sampler, featuring six sets of alphabets on a densely-woven fabric measuring 27.75” wide x 5.25” high. Based on style and materials, it likely is from the mid-19th century, possibly from Spain or Portugal. The letters in the third row at left, as well as horizontal stitches on the back side have been seen on Spanish and Portuguese samplers.
Alphabet samplers were common classroom exercises during the 18th and 19th centuries. Not only did students learn their alphabets, but also they had a record of alphabets to use when marking linens. Sometimes letters were omitted on purpose; other times, in error, adding to the charm of these treasures.”
The stitch count is 744w x 121h.
The model was stitched on 40 count linen using silk floss.
